Textbook Definition

–noun

1. a situation requiring a choice between equally undesirable alternatives.
2. a situation that requires a choice between options that are or seem equally unfavorable or mutually exclusive.

Word Origin & History

1523, from L.L. dilemma, from Gk. dilemma “double proposition,” a technical term in rhetoric, from di- “two” + lemma “premise, anything taken,” from base *lab-. It should be used only of situations where someone is forced to choose between two alternatives, both unfavorable to him.

As I left work today, I absentmindedly put my cell phone in my lap. (A bad habit I know.)

On the way home, I stopped at the post office. When I got out of my car, forgetting that I had a cell phone in my lap, I managed to drop the cell phone in the parking lot. Just under another car.

To clarify, just under another car whose owner had just started the engine.

I think you can see where this is going.

I had about a split second to size up the situation and discover I had three options:

  • Bang on her window like a crazy person.
  • Reach under and get my cell phone.
  • Do nothing.

I tried waving at her to get her attention, but she was preoccupied looking behind her to make sure no cars were coming so she could back out of her space.

It was then that I realized I had a true dilemma.

It was my phone. Or my hand (head?)

And then I watched her run over my cell phone.

The power of Knitters.

I’ve had several posts in mind of late, but this one clearly deserves to be written today.

On Tuesday, January 12 a catastrophic earthquake struck Haiti.

On Wednesday, January 13, the Yarn Harlot, knitter and author, posted the Knit Signal asking Knitters all around the world to do what they could to help the people of Haiti by donating to Doctors Without Borders.

Also on Wednesday, January 13, one of the moderators of the Completely Pointless and Arbitrary Swap Group on Ravelry started an auction thread, where people could donate yarny items to be bid on with all the proceeds going to your favorite charity (American Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, The International Rescue Committee).

On Monday January 18, just 5 days after the Knit Signal went up, Knitters had donated over $234,000 to Doctors Without Borders. The emails and donations are still pouring in.

As of this morning, January 20, my group on Ravelry has raised over $17,500. Another group on Ravelry that I participate in has raised over $35,000.

That is the power of the knitting community and I am unspeakably proud to belong to such a wonderful group of people.

Thawing out.

Phew! It’s 44 degrees today and I’m loving it! No it’s not my 60′s and 70′s from days of LA past, but I’ll take it! See, for the last two weeks we’ve been subjected to highs of ZERO and ice and snow and winter of DOOM. Yeah ok, maybe not that bad, but it says something when my dad tells me he’s heard that Kansas City is one of the coldest places in the country, doesn’t it?

With that in mind, I raced to finish some mittens!

The Pattern: Fiddleheads by Adrian Bizilia

The Yarn: Tanis Fiber Arts kit at PickupSticks

The Needles: The pattern calls for US3, but I used US1

The Verdict: I LOVE these mittens! If I make them again, and I will, I will probably make them on US2′s so that they will be a bit larger and have room for a more substantial liner. As they are, I ended up subbing Kid Silk Haze as the liner (yarn was included in the kit – but I had some KSH in the stash!) because the mittens weren’t quite big enough for the intended liner. These took me a few weeks to knit because I dallied a little, but I knit the entire second mitten in 2 afternoons, and then the liners only took me a few more hours. Now my fingers are toasty warm!

Oh my.

This is some seriously lovely sockage:

And I didn’t knit them. These were knit for me by a wonderful friend who I have never met in person, only online on Ravelry. Thank you Kippi! They will be treasured!
